District Activites

The Canadian Valley District of the Boy Scouts of America held their annual awards banquet Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee.  The guest speaker was Dr. Rich Rudebock, Dean of Business at Oklahoma Baptist University.  District Chairman Randy Smith and District Executive Shane Pate were the Masters of Ceremonies.  Boy Scouts and Leaders of Troop 461, Shawnee served as hosts of the event.  The Invocation was presented by the Pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church. As part of the banquet, awards were presented to the following persons and units:

In Cub Scouting:  Cub Scout of the Year is Riley Smith of Pack 402, Shawnee;  Cub Scout Pack of the Year is Pack 477, McLoud; Den Leader of the Year is Brett Askin of Pack 461, Shawnee and the Cubmaster of the Year is Kent Harris of Pack 417, Tecumseh. 

Boy Scout awards included: Boy Scout of the Year, Andrew Burum of Troop 477, McLoud; Troop of the Year – Troop 408, Shawnee;  Assistant Scoutmaster of the Year – Randy Patterson of Troop 477, McLoud and Scoutmaster of the Year – Alan Rogers of Troop 408, Shawnee.

Venture Scout awards included: Venture Scout of the Year - Stephanie Currie of Crew 461, Shawnee, The Venture Advisor of the year, Jim Richardson, Crew 461, Shawnee and the Venture Crew of the year, Crew 461 of Shawnee.

Unit Sponsor of the year is Wesley United Methodist Church of Shawnee for their support of the Scout units that are chartered to them as well support of Scouting in our community and beyond. 

Special recognition awards for service to the Distict were presented to Ken Cadaret of Bethel, Randy Patterson of McLoud,  Jim Richardson of Shawnee and Cathy Rogers of Shawnee.

            Awards were also presented by the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society, to recognize members of the CVD Chapter.  Tim Askins of Shawnee was recognized as Chapter Chief for 2007.  Bronze Buffalo Awards for service to the chapter were presented to Tim Askins of Shawnee, Aaron Patterson of McLoud and Dalton Smith of Shawnee.  White Buffalo Awards, for service to the Lodge were presented to David Snider of Shawnee,  Paul Schmidlkofer of Shawnee, Cathy Rogers of Shawnee and Barbara Garlington of Maud. Vigil Honorees (The highest honor for an Arrowman) included father and son Norvel & Matthew Garlington of Maud, father & son Jay and Andrew Burum of McLoud, Aaron Patterson of Mcloud, Justus Davenport of Shawnee and Seth McElfresh of Shawnee. Bow String Society  Sashes (Special National Honors for their work on ceremonies teams) were presented to Tom Askins of Shawnee, Andrew Burum of McLoud, Matthew Garlington of Maud and Aaron Patterson of McLoud. Andrew Burum, McLoud,  is currently the Lodge Chief and was also recently recognized for his outstanding service to the Order of the Arrow at the Council and National levels by receiving the Bill George Award and The Founders Award.

            The 2007 Eagle Scouts in our District were also recognized:  Chris Copeland, Nicholas Copeland, Jonathan Dame and Heath Hammons of Troop 424, Bethel; Daniel Lemons, Zac Morgan, Jerry Short and Arden Tripp of Troop 485, Prague; Andrew Burum, Tanner Faulkner and Aaron Patterson of Troop 477, McLoud;  Nicholas Armour of Troop 414; Josh Phillips of Troop 408, Shawnee and Seth McElfresh of Troop 411, Shawnee.

A silent auction was also held to raise money for the distict.

The Spring Camporee at Camp Saskwa was announced - the theme will be a firearms and hunter's safety event to be held the last weekend in March.  Come to Roundtable to learn more!
